Cello Basics Intro: About Me & My Cello Teaching Videos

I’m delighted to introduce my new series of cello instructional videos, designed to support players at every stage of their learning.

I am Ailbhe McDonagh, a cellist and composer from Ireland, and Professor of Cello at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. Alongside my teaching, I have written two books of cello repertoire published by Boosey & Hawkes: It’s a Cello Thing, Book 1 and It’s a Cello Thing, Book 2. My recording work includes the complete Bach Solo Cello Suites and the Beethoven Cello and Piano Sonatas, both released on the Steinway label.

This new video series is structured in four levels:
  • Beginner – for those new to the cello, building the foundations of playing.
  • Intermediate – for players with some experience who want to move more confidently around the fingerboard and develop a richer sound.
  • Advanced – focusing on tone quality, sound production, and the more complex techniques of cello playing.
  • Masterclass – exploring specific pieces in depth, with guidance on practice strategies and interpretation.

My aim is to provide a clear pathway through the stages of cello playing, from your very first notes to polished performances of major works.

I hope these lessons serve as a valuable companion on your journey with the cello.
